Bagua

The eight directions seal space on the level of the plane. In the Chinese tradition, they are called the Bagua and are assigned to the eight houses of the I Ching. Even numbers (with the exception of 2) are considered generally more stable than odd numbers - because they have an intrinsic equilibrium. They thus often represent a "cooling stage" that follows from the "hot" nature of the odd numbers. If 7 is noise - 8 is signal. 8 seals all the corners of the house and creates a controlled chamber of transformation and communication. The eight directions are such a chamber and when the adept stands at the heart of the circle, and honors those directions, they are evoking the forces of communication, closure, and control - albeit against the backdrop of a wildly dynamic field. If you ever need to "gather yourself together", the Bagua is an excellent tool for achieving this.
