Altar of the Fours

The power of four is to lay out a table - an altar - a foundation for all that is to come. The fourfold directional compass establishes the possibility of a navigable world. The power of four lets us express order as we understand it. For this reason, altar magick is the branch of the art that it most closely implies. Four is a demiurge - an open frame upon which the orderings of heaven hang. Four is the chassis of the mythopoeic cosmos. YHVH is a four letter name, as is ZEUS, as is ODIN. These are all expressions of something that was discovered by every civilization that made the transition to lettered, agricultural urbanization. Pythagoras called the basic framework "Tetractys", a triangular expression of 1+2+3+4=10. 4 is the bridge between the monad and the decad - between the divine and the world. Four is the bottleneck, the emperor, the table of the divine altar. Four is where authority starts - both its benefits and its flaws. Those who worship it blindly and those who hate it unreservedly are both deluded. It is a moment in the ecology of hyper-reality, and where we know this, we can learn to include it without stopping there. Make the Demiurge transparent. Make your worship into open hearted, loving play - the incense that pleases eternity best.
